Administrative, supervisory, and inspection work related to the enforcement and interpretation of the State Building Code, the local zoning bylaw, Old King’s Highway Regional Historic District Regulations and other applicable regulations; serves as the Town’s ADA Coordinator.


Plans, directs, coordinates, and administers the activities of the building department which includes the activities of the plumbing, gas, and the electrical inspectors; supervises and assigns work to all subordinate inspectors; consults with public officials on departmental matters Conduct construction related field inspections.


Inspects residential and commercial buildings and alterations under construction and upon completion to monitor compliance with code requirements and approved plans; inspects safety conditions of existing buildings; inspects places of assembly and public buildings annually.


Confers with other Town staff, builders, architects, engineers, property owners, attorneys, and the general public regarding construction requirements, zoning issues and other related regulatory matters.


Reviews and interprets plans for building construction or alteration; issues building permits, administers building permit issuance process involving review of building permit applications by the various inspectors; seeks to resolve issues raised by the review process; maintains associated logs and inspection records. Issues certificates of inspection, certificates of occupancy, notices of violation, and stop work.


Monitors and enforces compliance with state building codes, local zoning bylaws, special permits and other applicable regulations, including sign code; interprets and reviews compliance with local zoning bylaw and special permit conditions; investigates complaints of alleged violations and takes appropriate action as required; issues violation notices, cease and desist orders, and files complaints in district.


Participates in the coordinated review process with various Town boards, including the Planning Board, Board of Health, Conservation Commission, and the Zoning Board of Appeals; attends Zoning board meetings to provide input and advice on relevant matters pending before the board; attends other relevant board meetings as required.


Responds orally and in writing to inquiries from property owners, banks, real estate firms, and the general public; explains building code regulations and bylaw provisions; explains procedures and assists applicants in completing required forms; discusses construction methods and materials with building professionals in order to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations.


Prepares and manages the annual budget for the Building Department for submission to the Town Manager; oversees the maintenance of departmental records and departmental correspondence.


Working with Community Rating System (CRS) coordinators to advance the town’s standing in the CRS program as well as enforcing additional standards in support of advanced flood-plain management.


Managed and actively worked on building and remodeling projects. Organized and coordinated materials and sub-contractors. Interacted with customers, engineers, architects and building inspectors. Developed and coordinated project schedules and budgets.
